Summary:
Video instructions detail how to perform this reaction.
Materials needed:
- Hydrogen peroxide H 2 O 2 (30%) - This is ten times stronger than normal hydrogen peroxide you can find in stores
- Sodium iodide NaI solution, 2 M
- Soft soap
- Food coloring
- Graduated cylinder (500 mL)
- Safety glasses
- Latex gloves for clean-up
- The first step is to wear your safety glasses.
- Measure 20 mL of 30% hydrogen peroxide into a measuring cup. It's best to place the cylinder in a large tray to make clean-up as easy as possible.
- Add squirt (a technical term meaning approximately 5 mL) of dish soap into a measuring cup containing 30% hydrogen peroxide.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the things spice.
- The last step is to add 5 mL of sodium iodide 2M (2M refers to the molarity of solution). The reaction is rapid, so it is important to stand back.
- You will notice that the foam has a brown tint. This is because of the free iodine produced by the oxidation of the extreme power of 30% hydrogen peroxide.
